I have been reading the writing of Mike Oliver for at least a few years now. If there is anyone in disability whose work has had deep impact on me, it is him. Time and again I find myself going back to his writings and referring and using some of this principles and ideas in my own work. Really what a mind. Just awhile ago I accidentally got to read his obituary, and I thought I must save it for myself. So here it is.
I think a life is really worthwhile if it leaves deep impressions on other minds and encourages them to think more freely, critically and transformatively. Oliver has had that impact on me, not only in my thinking about what the nature of research should be in disability, how one could engage with peers and what the goals of such research ought to be- a great, wonderful, radical mind. It is a great thing just to know his ideas.
